Monthly Medley

Union Square Holiday Market

Earlier this month I was complaining about December not coming fast enough (although always enjoying the fall), I was dying for the bipolar autumn weather to be replaced by layers of snow, and I was dreaming about millions of fairy lights that would come and adorn the city. But today, as I was strolling around the beautifully decorated streets of New York, I realised there was no reason for me to complain at all. December has finally come––almost, anyway––with all its joy and its lights.

Although this upcoming week will probably be the longest week of the year to me––due to both finals and excitement for my friends/family coming to NY for the holidays––I'm very excited about what's to come in this last month of the year. I've been working in some projects that I hope will get finalised during december, and will home to life with the new year. I've also been dreaming of finally having some free time to explore all the hidden places of New York that I haven't seen yet.

But I shouldn't jump into the future yet––and this lesson I learned this month! Sometimes I get too excited with my new plans and tend to forget what I've achieved; I forget to look back and be thankful. And if there's a month to be thankful in the year, it's got to be November––yes, because it's American Thanksgiving.

Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to celebrate a real Thanksgiving yet, but I did have time to get started on some Christmas shopping––and to realise there are some shopping patterns I repeat year after year. I also spent a wonderful night at the museum (and visited other museums and art exhibitions as well)––which wasn't scary at all, although very fun!––and went for dinner out after what seemed to be ages.

What I did have the time to do––which turned out to be a strategic decision because it allowed me to get a well-deserved break––was to escape to Mexico for a weekend. I didn't do many exciting things––except for eating a lot and finding old pictures in my computer––but I could rest and get renewed before finals. It also allowed me to finally start feeling festive upon my return to New York!

I am now absolutely ready to embrace the cold of the winter, to hug my family upon their arrival in the city, and to have an absolutely great Christmas. Happy December!

A Night At The Museum

A Night in the Museum

The Met Museum is definitely my favourite museum in the world––and no doubt one of my favourite places in New York! Although I could visit pretty much any day of the year and spend hours there, I particularly enjoy it after hours, when there are not so many people visiting, and when I have the time to admire the wonderful works of art in it.

At the beginning of the week, I had the chance to spend a sweet little evening at the museum, and it was nothing but wonderful. Not only did I get the chance to have a quick look at the Greco-Roman gallery, but I also spent quite a while visiting the Cubism exhibition––which I sincerely recommend seeing! I also paid a visit to their Christmas tree and the Nativity scene, and wandered around the shop, trying to get started on Holiday Shopping!

In My Holiday Shopping List

Holiday Shopping

With Black Friday come and gone, I guess the Holiday Season has really started... Which means that it's time to get all those gifts together for the people we love! I'm not a big fan of crowds, so I tried to avoid as many stores as possible today, but I did make a short list of the things I have to buy.

Although I wouldn't consider myself a very experienced person when it comes to holiday shopping––in the end, I'm only in my twenties, and it was not so long ago when I started buying presents with money I earned––there are a few things that always make it to my list.

1. Books

One of my professors used to say:
Books are like friends; you should always have lots of them, because you never know when you're going to need them.
To be honest, I couldn't agree more with him. I love buying books for myself and sharing them with the people I love. I guess there are also an amazing gift because they are super versatile, and can adjust pretty much to every personality. For example, I will always give business/entrepreneurship books to my dad, girl novels to my sister, and cookbooks to my aunt. I also have a major obsession with coffee table books, and they're awesome especially for those who are not avid readers: you can never have enough, and they're a lovely piece to decorate pretty much any home.

2. Jewellery

When it comes to finding the perfect gift for my family, I love finding things that will last for a very long time. And this is exactly what jewellery is all about. Although this tends to be a little hard because you definitely need to know the person you're buying jewellery for, it is definitely something that will stay with them forever.

When it comes to my mum, I normally get her pearls, and my sister has a big crash on Tous, so I will most likely pay them a visit to get something for her. Jewellery can also be a good gift for men, and in this case, I would search for some cute and unique cufflinks.

3. Food

Sometimes you don't have to spend hundreds/thousands of dollars to make people happy on Christmas. I, for example, would die of happiness if someone came to me with either a bag of chocolates or a good panettone. I'm pretty sure my sister would agree with the chocolate, although my mum would probably prefer a basket of bread with some paté.

A bag of good (Colombian) ground coffee or a unique tea can also be a great present. I sometimes like giving them with mugs that I feel suit the personality of my loved ones.

4. Stationery

It might be because I'm surrounded by a group of OCD-suffering people, but everyone seems to need a good planner year after year. So whenever I find cute planners, I often give them to my friends for Christmas as a cute little detail that will spend a whole year with them.

Stationery in general is also really good. In the end, people often have to send thank you cards, or just write notes to others... So stationery makes a great gift.

5. Love!

I've always found a little funny how people always manage to get very stressed during the holiday season when they're shopping for presents. Although love is definitely not something money can buy, we're supposed to give all those presents to people around us because we love them.

So whenever I'm doing holiday shopping, I always try to keep in my mind how much I love the people I'm shopping for. This does not only make me happy, but it also helps me find better things for them. If you shop just to get it done, you probably won't find any good presents. But if you shop with the heart, then everything will be much, much better!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Although this year I missed out on my friend D's amazing turkey and Thanksgiving dinner, today is still a day to be thankful for. Even though I'm far away from my family and most of my lifetime friends, I have finally come to a point where I call New York my home, and I am absolutely loving my new life here. I definitely have to be thankful for that!

I'm thankful for New York and its craziness.
I'm thankful for all the new friends I've made, and from the old ones that have now become my family.
I'm thankful for my family, who has showed me they can be very close to me, even if we're miles apart.
I'm thankful for school––yes, I'm a geek––and all the wonderful things I've learned this year.
I'm thankful for art history and the Met Museum.
I'm thankful for a potential Ph.D application.
I'm thankful for finding a new obsession for photography and for everyone who takes the time to see my pictures every day.
I'm thankful for seeing my dreams slowly coming true.
I'm thankful for life!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Restaurant Outings: Novecento

It seems like the last time I actively took pictures of delicious food and uploaded them to the blog was years ago! The last time I remember doing it was when I visited Don Antonio for the first time, and before then, when I took my family to Fig & Olive. For some reason, although I eat out quite a lot––who doesn't in New York?––I had sort of forgotten the pleasure that it is to take pictures of good food. Although, to be honest, my favourite part is seeing them afterwards and remembering the amazing flavour of the food!

I went recently to Novecento, an Argentinian bistro in Lower Manhattan. Although the food was indeed delicious, I should warn you that I'm a little biased about it because Argentinian food reminds me a lot about home and spending entire afternoons eating this type of food with my family.

Restaurant Outings: Novecento

As usual, I had to try as many dishes as possible, so I went with a couple of friends to make sure we would all eat lots and lots. We started out with a Trio Argentino, which had morcilla, chorizo and mollejas, together with the best chimichurri I've had in quite a while...

Restaurant Outings: Novecento

We then had some salads (Caprese and arugula salad, nothing very extravagant)...

...and steamed mussels with white wine sauce.

Restaurant Outings: Novecento

We skipped dessert, but only because we went to Magnolia to get some Banana Pudding, just to keep up with a little tradition of ours. I'm most likely going back to Novecento though, so you'll probably see some dessert pictures soon!

You can find the full dinner menu here.

Feeling Festive

Feeling Festive

I love how the city is slowly gearing up for Christmas. I really like all the beautiful decorations that are filling New York with the Joy of Christmas. And although I adore all sorts of decorations, my favourite have got to be fairy lights. They are absolutely magical! Although they are pretty simple as a decoration, they will always make a difference, and they will always be the main ingredient for beautiful Christmas decorations!

Happy Birthday, M!

Maria & I

As much as I love being in New York, I can't deny that I miss my family and friends sometimes. And these past few days I've been missing them more than ever!

Today is my best friend's birthday and, although I did have lots of fun having dinner and going out with my girls in New York, I couldn't stop thinking about not being with her. Last year we started brainstorming what we should do to celebrate her birthday––and our ideas were so good we should have started a party planning business right there––and had the best time ever. And this year I'm miles away and with no chance of seeing her today.

But I did spend some time looking at old pictures in my laptop. Most of them were absolutely horrible––we weren't particularly good-looking during our teens––but they made me laugh––and cry a little––from all the great memories they brought back. I really wish I could be with her right now... But I know that not even the distance will tear us apart.

I'm really, really glad that I have shared the past two decades of my life with this girl––and I'm sure she doesn't need me to party hard and have a blast today on her birthday!

Love you baby, Happy Birthday!

PS. I'm including a couple extra photos from a few years ago below. They were the only decent ones I found in my laptop, and unfortunately I don't have access to all our childhood photos, which are at my parents' house in Colombia.

Travel Tips: Carry-On Luggage

With Thanksgiving break happening so soon, I haven't stopped thinking about traveling and taking a well-deserved break––and eat lots and lots, as it always happens during Thanksgiving! So I thought I should share some of my travel tips.

The most essential part of packing, to me, is the carry-on luggage. I hate to carry lots of big, chunky and heavy bags, so I normally try to pack light, especially carry-on things because that's what I will have to carry around with me all the time. I normally just bring a light bag with me, and only bring a real suitcase when I feel obliged to.

Carry-On Luggage

Inside my bag, I always make sure I have some warm socks and a small blanket/scarf because airplanes are usually freezing. I also bring a sleeping mask just in case I decide to take a nap. I also bring a good book to read if I can't fall asleep, and some snacks––I need food all the time because I'm always hungry. Some beauty products always make the cut as well––hand lotion and lip balm because my skin gets too dry when flying, and my favourite perfume to make sure I smell (and feel) nice when I arrive in my destination.

Yesterday was the first day of the Union Square Holiday Market, one of my favourite places to visit during the winter. It might be because I'm in love with everything handmade––and that might be related to my love for arts and crafts in general––but I can spend hours in this type of artisanal markets without even noticing how the time goes by.

So of course, I had to visit the Union Square market on its first day. And I loved it! I didn't really buy anything, but I came back home with lots of gift ideas––most of them for myself, shamelessly––that I will definitely go back to buy. Some of my favourite stands were Edie ArtLola BeanDr. Sofskins... and of course all the food places––especially if they had waffles and hot chocolate!

The market will be open until December 24, so there's still a lot of time to visit (again) and support all the artisans that are participating in it.

Last Days of Fall in New York

Last Days of Fall

After a couple of days with temperatures below zero––Celsius; I still don't learn how to use Fahrenheit degrees––it's pretty obvious that the winter will soon be here, and the city will be covered under white layers of snow. Although the temperature is now too cold to wander around the city, I managed to shoot a few pictures of fall foliage in Central Park before leaving for my weekend retreat.

Although I'm pretty excited about the snow, I am also a little disappointed that the fall went by so quickly. I love seeing the trees covered in shades of orange and red, and adore the perfect weather of the fall. Why couldn't it last longer?!
